The Magic Flute opera, 2007/2008

The world premiere of the opera took place in Vienna in September 1791 year old. In 2007 the French director Alain Maratre presented his vision of The Magic Flute at the Mariinsky Theatre. For more than 10 years, the production has been a success.

According to the story, Prince Tamino receives a flute from the Queen of the Night, which is supposed to help him save his beloved Pamina from the sorcerer. As usual, on the way to his dream, the main character will have to overcome many obstacles and solve difficult riddles.

Mozart's last opera - the singspiel - was one of the characteristic examples of propaganda of spiritual perfection through enlightenment, when goodness blows darkness, and reason - evil forces. Alain Maratre decided on a bold experiment - to involve the audience in what is happening. In his production, the artists move around the tiers of the theater, a recording of bird singing sounds at the entrance, and the revived flute appears before the public in the form of a girl with an instrument and a torch instead of a dragon.

Romeo and Juliet ballet, 2010

“From today's standpoint, the production has many advantages: a clear narrative line; elegant, refined dance, lyrical duets; decorations by Peter Williams , whose faded splendor accurately conveys the atmosphere of the Italian Renaissance. And here we need absolute faith and dedication on the part of two lovers, coming from the depths of the soul. Opera "May Night", 2009

Composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov made no secret of the fact that from childhood he loved Gogol's "Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka", while "May Night" was his favorite story. While working on the opera's libretto and plan, he tried to keep "accurately to the plot of Gogol and, as far as possible, preserving his colloquial text, which is abundant in his story."

The premiere of "May Night" took place on the stage of the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg in January 1880. In the 226th season of the theater (2008/2009years) a music festival dedicated to the 200th anniversary of Gogol was held at the Mariinsky Theater, and then a new production of the classical opera was presented.

The Barber of Seville opera, 2009

The Barber of Seville in a witty production by Alexei Stepanyuk was the most scandalous premiere of the Mariinsky Theater in 2009. The immortal masterpiece of Rossini in an unexpected interpretation of the director sounded for the audience in Russian. According to the plan, the action of the opera takes place in a certain European city somewhere in the 50s - 60s

“This is a conditional city in which certain general details of city life are emphasized, exaggerated. It was important for us to create an atmosphere that is a little strange, grotesque, somewhat reminiscent of Fellini's films, so, for the sake of the flavor of the place, we came up with new characters. And the counts (two actors are now rehearsing this role) not only sing with us, but also play in the play - one on the guitar, the other on the piano, ”Alexey Stepanyuk himself spoke about the production.

According to him, the goal was to make "a lively, modern performance about a person's struggle for happiness and independence, about how not to bend one's head in front of the powerful of the world and in front of money."

According to the plan, the action of the opera takes place in a certain European city somewhere in the 50s - 60s.

Ballet Anna Karenina, 2010

In April 2010, the premiere of the ballet Anna Karenina by Rodion Shchedrin took place at the Mariinsky Theatre.

It is believed that the idea of creating this ballet came to Maya Plisetskaya back in 1967 during the filming of a feature film based on the novel by Leo Tolstoy . Then the music for the film "Anna Karenina" was written by her husband Rodion Shchedrin.

“On the set of a dramatic film in which I acted as Princess Betsy of Tverskaya, the idea of a choreographic embodiment of Tolstoy's novel began to soar clearly in the air ... The music that Shchedrin wrote for the film was theatrical and plastic. It could be danced ... Almost all the shooting of the film was my internal dispute with the director of the film. To top it off, Shchedrin quarreled to the nines with Zarkhi: he godlessly shredded the music. Let's do ballet. Completely in its own way . .. ”, - the famous ballerina recalled that moment.

The premiere of the ballet in three acts took place on June 10, 1972 at the Bolshoi Theatre. He first appeared on the stage of the Mariinsky Theater in 2004 in Alexei Ratmansky's production of . In 2010, the ballet found a new life.

It is worth noting that Rodion Shchedrin created the operas Lefty (2013) and A Christmas Tale (2015) especially for the Mariinsky Theatre.

Woman Without a Shadow, 2009year

In 1919, Richard Strauss' opera "The Woman Without a Shadow" premiered at the Vienna State Opera, which was conceived as a philosophical humanistic fairy tale.

The Russian premiere of the opera took place on November 16, 2009 at the Mariinsky Theatre. was directed by director Jonathan Kent . In 2007, the Englishman successfully installed Elektra there.

In his version, instead of a fairy tale world, the characters interact in urban scenery. So, for example, one of the heroes - the dyer Barak, whose young wife does not want to have children - does not live in a hut, but in a dull garage full of an old car, pans and washing machines.

The Brothers Karamazov opera, 2008

The world premiere of the mystery opera took place at the Mariinsky Theater in 2008.

The performance caused a lot of conflicting reviews. Some critics noted that "musical emotions are constantly overflowing", and the young director Vasily Barkhatov was able to make "a subtle, not childishly masterful performance, where almost each of the huge number of Dostoevsky's characters is prominently drawn more than once."

Wasserman from The Offspring: About breaking the rules, smoky bars and excitement in front of the stage also played at the KUBANA-2012 festival. Krasnodar became the first of nine cities where The Offspring will give concerts as part of their first Russian tour.

The Offspring's performance took place in the DC "Olimp" and gathered several thousand fans of all ages. Under the hit hits "Pretty Fly" and "Self Esteem" and songs from the last of the released albums "Days Go By", both young people and loyal fans, who have been waiting for such a holiday since 90's. Many of the "oldies" took children to the concert, demonstrating that a new generation of fans of the group is already being brought up.

Before the concert, The Offspring's permanent guitarist Kevin "Noodles" Wasserman told the YUGA.ru portal about how punk has changed since the band's first album, and about his love for smoky bars.

With a concert in Krasnodar, your first tour of Russia in the history of the band begins. Are you still nervous before going on stage?

- Of course, it's very exciting! I get nervous every time before a stage. It seems to me that if this feeling did not exist, then it would be time to finish. After all, you never know what to expect. In Krasnodar, we are performing for the first time in general. And I, of course, hope that everything will go very cool. But you never know ... suddenly we screw up (laughs).
We performed at the KUBANA festival a year ago, it's not that far from Krasnodar. And this performance was already very different from the concerts in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Now we are going to see more cities in Russia, learn more about the Russian public and culture in general. We will also meet some local bands. In Krasnodar, however, unlike other cities of the tour, we will not have a "warm-up".

As part of the tour, you will present songs from the album "Days Go By". What do you put in this name?

- This is sympathy for people who live in our difficult times. We see that the world economy is about to collapse, people are fighting among themselves, the world is engulfed in natural disasters. By the way, we already have a song from the last album about the fact that horror is happening around. And people have to live in this world with this bunch of shitty problems, and we want to give them a positive charge and help them get through this time with the thought that all this will pass, and with hope for a better future.

How has The Offspring changed since the first album?

- On the album "The Offspring" we just learned everything: how to play, write songs ... The first album reflects very well what influenced us then: what bands we listened to, what songs we liked. "Ignition", I think, was the first album where we created the "Offspring" style, which no longer had that influence of other bands; on this album there were already more of us.
Since then, we've been going back to fast and aggressive punk stuff all the time and putting it all together with simple melodies as well as rock. It gives us pleasure.
But I don't think we've changed much since "Ignition" or "Smash". Maybe they have become a little better at singing and playing, but we still love the same music, the same style.

Do you somehow try not to go beyond the scope of punk music, or does it come naturally?

- The Offspring is a punk band that came out of the punk scene. Punk rock taught us everything we know about music now. Punk rock showed us how to make life better. We were kind of nerds, out of touch with the life around us, who liked aggressive music. And thanks to punk, we realized that we do not have to accept the world as it is. We can try to change it all and make it better. It's such a positive way of thinking.
Punk is the base, of course, but we like to mix it with reggae, ska or whatever. It's a style we've always loved and will keep coming back to. But, at the same time, I can't say that we are just a punk band.

What did it mean to be a punk 30 years ago and what does it mean to be one now?

– Oh, the difference, of course, is big! 20-30 years ago, the world was perfectly prepared for punk rock to emerge. The big break was made by Nirvana, which kind of broke down a certain door (before them, in fact, there was a big arena only for rock). And I think people were ready for punk rock, because rock 'n' roll was no longer rebellious, it had become music for fun by then. And punk rock, it seems to me, just had that rebelliousness that everyone missed. Now we have a lot of pop-punk bands, so the same thing happened to punk that happened to rock and roll in its time: it also ended up being music for fun. But among even these groups there are now quite good ones, even if they sing about girls and cars.

Then what does punk mean to you?

– For me, punk is breaking the rules. And some of them really need to be broken. Those that are outdated, that fetter people, limit some of their freedom. Do not accept conventions, question everything. That's what punk rock is about to me.

Your music is the perfect party soundtrack. What is the ideal party in your mind?

- I love bars that play rock 'n' roll, you know, smoky ones where you can hear some AC/DC and the Rolling Stones and Dead Kennedy's and Black Flag. I can't stand dance clubs where it's tut-tut-tut! By the way, we still often hang out together with the guys from the group.

You already have some film experience. Would you like to do it again and star in some blockbuster? And in what genre?

– Oh, yes, filming Killing Hand was fun, we had fun back then. But, you know, we have such faces ... More for the radio than for the cinema (laughs). Although if they call, then, of course, why not! As for the genre... I love a lot of things. But lately, over horror films, all I do is laugh. It's very rare that a film scares me, because it has to get into your head to scare you inside, not on the screen. I also love comedies, I really like films with Will Ferrell. And gangster films are good too, Tarantino is amazing: both funny and dark.

The group will celebrate its 30th anniversary next year. Is there anything special prepared for this date?

– We will even have a few anniversaries: another 20 years of the album "Smash" and 25 years of our very first record.
