Many do not understand streams, treat them with disdain, they say, this is pampering. However, the popularity of broadcasts on YouTube and Twitch is only growing, and the fees of top streamers are already in the millions of dollars. No wonder people try to imitate them. But in order to start streaming, you need to prepare your own studio.

You've probably seen these strange streamer workstations: two or three monitors, a microphone on a boom, a good webcam, customized lighting. All this is connected to a high-performance computer and serves not so much to communicate with the audience and show yourself as a loved one in the corner of the screen, but also to monitor events, manage the process, view viewer comments. It's not as easy as it seems from the outside *.

During the stream, several programs and services run in parallel, many windows are open. At any moment, the unexpected can happen (broadcasts are usually conducted from a house where relatives roam, a neighbor with a drill lurks behind the wall, and a collector strains over the bell button). So you need to have quick access to running programs in order to instantly turn off the microphone or camera, switch the broadcast scene (for example, to a dynamic picture so that the audience does not see how you sort things out), leave a comment (“Technical break”).

Even if you have three monitors installed, you can quickly switch your attention between applications and remember where everything is, it is still better to have a single tool at hand to automate the process. It is no wonder that streamers eventually acquire devices such as Stream Deck from Elgato or its smaller copy - Stream Deck Mini, which will be discussed today. They differ in size and number of buttons, but use the same software and have the same functionality.

The device has the shape of a triangular prism and small dimensions. One of the faces is the base with a gasket made of non-slip material, the second is decorated with a logo, and the third is the most interesting - 6 programmable buttons.

Stream Deck Mini connects to your computer with a single USB cable. Software called Stream Deck is downloaded from the manufacturer's website. Windows 10 and macOS operating systems are supported from version 10.11, that is, if you wish, you can use the device in conjunction with Macs. Since these computers are more suitable for working with professional applications than for games, a little later I will talk about, let's say, undocumented features of the Stream Deck.

The Stream Deck Mini's button caps are made of transparent plastic, and below them are proportionate LCD screens that display static or dynamic images. For example, you can turn one of the buttons into a timer - and the countdown will be displayed on it in real time!

Button brightness can be controlled. But more importantly, they can be programmed, and in any way. In fact, this is a panel of "hot keys" for those who are too lazy to memorize combinations on the keyboard. The first thing I installed was taking screenshots and recording video, since these are the key combinations I use most often, and in dynamic games it is not always convenient to activate them.

By binding a button to a key combination, you can label it (and the inscription will be displayed on the screen) and attach a 72x72 pixel image to it. Don't like the options proposed by the Stream Deck developers? You can create your own icon in the online graphic editor that opens when you select the "Create your own icon" option! Management is elementary. Save the result on your PC, point the Stream Deck to the file, and the result of your creativity turns into one of the buttons.

As for broadcasts, here Stream Deck Mini shows itself in all its glory, because the software has preset settings for working with popular streaming programs (OBS Studio, Streamlabs, TipeeStream, XSplit), services (Twitch, YouTube and even Mixer), there is access to Twitter.

So what can you do with Stream Deck software? To begin with, we turn the device into a simple monitor - one of the buttons starts showing the number of viewers on YouTube or Twitch (in Mixer this number is usually zero). This is necessary not so much in order to amuse one's pride, but in order to understand whether the broadcast is going on at all. I had a situation a couple of times when the broadcast was on Twitch, but was cut off on YouTube for some technical reason. The sooner you know this, the better.

Next, we make messages and bind them to buttons. Something along the lines of "Hi everyone! Let's start!”, “Thank you for your attention!”, “Technical break!”. This is done very simply.

To work directly with broadcasts, functions are already selected to taste: start and end, switch between scenes, mute the audio track of your choice (for example, turn off the microphone or, on the contrary, the game).

I have been using the Stream Deck for about a month and it has saved me many times in ugly situations. For example, I recently broadcast the role-playing game Pathfinder: Kingmaker from Russian developers. After about an hour, the game froze, didn't let me switch to other apps, didn't respond to Alt+F4. However, clicking the End Stream button on the Stream Deck Mini allowed me to complete the process. Accordingly, there were no accompanying problems with streaming services. Once, due to a computer crash, Twitch did not realize that the broadcast was over, and my channel showed a black screen to the universe for several hours. Unpleasant.

It is easy to see that I have highlighted a lot of commands, and not all of them will fit on the small Stream Deck Mini panel of six buttons. Here the ability to add different profiles comes to the rescue (you can instantly switch between them), make folders with separate commands in them, or set up a “multi-tasking” button. In fact, this is such a macro where you can stuff a lot of cyclic commands, for example, “start broadcasting”, “say hello”, “say goodbye”, “end broadcast”. Very comfortably.

Moreover, with the help of Strem Deck, you can launch individual applications and program certain profiles for them, which will be automatically activated when these applications are launched!

And here it is impossible not to mention that Stream Deck is suitable not only for streamers, although the software clearly hints at what programs it is intended to work with. It is also a good tool for working with professional applications. Let's say you start Premier Pro, and the corresponding profile is automatically activated, where the required commands are assigned to the Stream Deck buttons. Nice feature.
