Jump technique in Scottish solo dances
Scottish dancers spend a lot of time in the air, so they not only have to take off the ground often, but also land softly and carefully. Shady Glen teachers Valentina Burtseva, Alexandra Kareeva, Natalya Kuznetsova and Sergey Alferov share their observations on the technique of jumping in solo Scottish dances: sports solo (Highland dancing, Scottish national dancing) and stage choreography of Scottish step dancing.
Sergey : In any dance it would be nice to land softly and gently, but in the Scottish solo dance, especially the Scottish step and Highland, this is especially important. What do you think makes a soft landing stylistically/physically/in terms of dancer safety?
Alexandra : A soft landing in the highlands is the other side of the medal of a high, hard jump. With a hard landing, we risk all our joints, a huge load falls on the feet. Ideally, at the beginning of dance practice, extra attention should be paid to the jump.
Valentina : It is absolutely important to land softly and accurately. It is imperative to cushion the jump in the plie after landing. Be sure to follow the twist. Scottish dances have their own specifics: landing not on a full foot, but on half-toes, which further increases the risk of injury. Depreciation by the foot, too, of course, should be. First we land with the balls of our toes, then the arch of the foot gently approaches the floor, but in Scottish dances it does not reach it.
Natalia : Soft landing gives a feeling of lightness, airiness of the dance. The greater the ability to control the muscles, their training, the safer the movement. Muscles must be ready for loads not only for dancing, but also for a healthy life without flat feet, since the wrong position of the foot worsens depreciation and has a bad effect on the knee and hip joints, and the spine.
Sergey : Scottish dances, both solo and social, are very musical. Even in a sports solo (highland), where the music is often subordinated to technique, a good performance is not only visible, but also rhythmically “heard”, especially when the dancers practice movements not to the sounds of bagpipes, but without music. For me, the sound of a “heavy” landing ruins the pleasant impression of the dance in many ways. Why do you think beginner dancers (and some experienced ones too) have too loud and heavy landings, even when dancing in soft shoes?
Valentina : The sound of landing, in my opinion, does not always depend on your preparation. They just all sound different. Very famous dancers land quite loudly, unfortunately. I don't think there are many flaws in their technique. But basically it all depends on the tightness and concentration of the body in the jump and the emphasis of the jump: where does it go, to the floor or up.
Natalya : It also seems to me that the "heavyness" of the landing is only a perception, more often visual, often saying that the dancer is not in good shape.
Sergey : I agree about the tone. Often, an excessively loud landing is a signal that the performer is "falling" down, not completely in control of the movement. Plus, the feeling of lightness, including the lightness of a jump, is the most important stylistic element of the Scottish step dance tradition, of course!
Valentina : In my opinion, you should just think about the correct landing in the first place, softness will come during training. In the air, the whole body is like a string. As the feet approach the floor, the balls of the toes land first, followed by soft cushioning in the foot and knee.
Alexandra : When jumping, it is important to push yourself up by sharply straightening your knees, and not just by using your feet. But in no case should you force the load, you need to pay attention to the development of eversion and balance, strengthen the muscles of the core. If the muscles are not warmed up or weak, they will not be able to work well for a long time. This applies to both beginners and experienced dancers.
Natalia : In addition, for proper muscle function, it is necessary to maintain their elasticity. In order to effectively contract, the muscle must first be "straightened", and not "clamped". For these purposes, power stretching is needed.
Sergey : What other exercises would you recommend?
Valentina : The simplest and most effective exercise is assemble and change. If a person has never danced, you can first land on the whole foot and then gradually learn to lift the heel off the floor. The load should increase gradually: plie-jump-plie-stretched and repeat like this. Or: plie-jump-plie and hold a pause in it without straightening your knees, the next jump is made from the same plie. This is a more difficult option, it is very important here not to “spring” before jumping out.

Dance School — Balance Club
25 August 2016
The most significant aspects of any dance direction, of course, are all sorts of jumps and hops. Jumps , as a kind of dance movements, are the most spectacular - they give the dance high dynamics, giving the audience a feeling of lightness and airiness. Some dancers are truly born jumpers, others go to great lengths to develop the ability to jump high and, most importantly, easily. Be that as it may, every dancer who counts on the title of a professional must constantly improve the technique of his jumps, replenishing it with new, more complex elements.
In any dance style, be it Classical Dance or Jazz Modern, Break Dance or Hip Hop, there is a wide variety of jumps and jumps that are the most difficult part of any dance technique. And, despite the fact that the jumps of different dance styles are not always similar to each other, basic exercises and techniques for preparing for them can be used in any style. There are several tricks that will help you improve your jumps. First of all, it is necessary to develop the power of the push, which will allow you to make a high jump, sufficient to perform the desired figure in flight and fix it for as long as possible. In this article, the Balance Club Dance School provides some recommendations. By following them, you can develop your ability easily, dynamically and jump high .
Raise your weight! The best dancers in the world use various exercises in their training to lift their bodies up. Raises on toes with extended knees, lunges on one leg, and all sorts of squats are the best exercises that any dancer can do to improve their jumps. Find time in your classes for these exercises and soon you will begin to literally soar in the air like never before!
Work on your stretch! Stretch your calf muscles, hamstrings, and quads after each session: a dancer with flexible legs will be able to jump higher. If you are doing splits, try putting something under your front leg (like a rolled up mat). This is a good and safe way to improve your longitudinal split, which will add ease during the performance of jumps with open legs in flight.
Soften your landing! When learning to dance from scratch, before moving on to learning the jumps themselves, they learn the rules of landing. This is done because most of the injuries when performing jumps are due to improper landing. And an injury, as you know, can ruin not only the career of a professional dancer, but also bring a lot of trouble to a simple amateur. Even after a small jump, land only on tense legs, softening the landing with a springy plié. A dancer who regularly develops a deep plie performs more airy and graceful jumps, and is less likely to be injured when landing. Plie is an extremely important exercise for the dancer's health! Infrequent use of plie in your training can lead to underdevelopment of the tissues of the tendons of the ankle joints, hamstrings and weakness of the foot.
Stretch up! When performing in the jump and landing, keep your head high and your back extended - this will lighten your weight. Many dancers get distracted trying to see themselves in the mirror instead of stretching out and enjoying the feeling of flying.
Use vitamins! The bones, muscles and tendons of a dancer need a sufficient amount of vitamins and trace elements.
