How to dance at a house party
How To Dance At A House Party: Top 7 Tips
You probably know people who can dance instantly at a party without any problems. While you’d love to do the same, you can’t; you worry about being laughed at, you feel self-conscious. You might not even know how to dance at a house party at all!
Because dancing at a party is way different to dancing in a club.
How different is dancing at a party? Well for one thing, there’s less people at a party than club. And most of those people are going to be family and friends. The heat is on not to mess up! You never know whose going to start filming you (and embarrassing you later).
Dancing in a group also makes people feel vulnerable and self-conscious. There’s a pressure to feel confident and “in the groove” the second you get to your feet. You want to start impressing.
If you want to know how to dance at a house party and well, here are a few tricks to help you start.
Things to do beforehand
When you’re dancing at a party, you want to feel you can cut loose and enjoy the music in the moment. And to be able to do that, you need to know how to dance at a house party that feels comfortable to you.
1. Get comfortable with actually dancing
One of the best ways to get acquainted with dancing is to practice at home. Just put on some house music and just see where your body goes. If you feel a bit awkward doing this, that’s okay – just own the feeling but keep going.
The goal of dancing at home alone is to train your body and help it understand what dancing feels like. That way, the second you start dancing at a party, your body knows what to do.
Try and practice different moves as well. By doing that, you can quickly eliminate what doesn’t work for you and get comfortable with what does.
Practice by dancing with all your body – how you move your legs and feet, what you do with your arms. Discover if you’re a dancer who likes to move all around the room or prefers to occupy a single spot. The more you know what you like, and how to dance at a house party using your particular style, the better you will feel.
2. Practice to different music styles
You just never know what music you’re going to get at a party so you need to be prepared. Mix up what you’re used to listening to with different genres, from indie rock to R&B, to find out how you like to move.
Perhaps your dance style doesn’t change at all and that’s fine. You don’t have to become an R&B dancer and a pop music dancer and a rock-loving one, with a different style for each. Practicing to different music means you can stay confident and in the flow by shifts in a party playlist.
3. Learn to move with music every day
Once you start feeling comfortable with dancing with yourself, start applying it to your daily routine. For example, when you’re preparing dinner, put on some music and dance as you cook. Groove to some hip hop while washing the dishes. Dancing to household chores can help them go by briskly!
By allowing music to be part of your life, you stop feeling self conscious when you fancy some toe tapping or feel an urge to dance.
More importantly, when you learn to feel music as a joyful part of life, you won’t be intimidated by people around you at a party. What I mean is: we often feel awkward dancing at parties because we think everyone is watching us.
But if your focus is solely on the music and the pleasure it brings you, all of those other people won’t matter. You’re dancing your thing for you only, and that’s a fantastic place to get to.
Dancing should make you feel good.
At the party night itself
Now you’ve done all that practice, time for the party.
Unlike dancing at home, you won’t get to control the dancefloor. You might be dancing in someone’s living room or their backyard. Maybe the dance area is in the middle of a party space with food and socialising placed around the sides.
Perhaps there are ten guests or a hundred guests at the party; from close friends and family, to colleagues or complete strangers. Do not worry about them. Forget about them, they’re not important, only you are.
So you’ve had a few drinks and a few chats, you’re feeling a bit mellow and toe tapping to some tunes, right? But now you want to go further than that.
The next step in how to dance at a house party is how to get up and do it, without feeling self conscious.
(You can do this next step whether the dancefloor is crowded or not).
1. Get on the dancefloor by doing this
One of the major worries partygoers have when dancing at parties is the feeling they’re being watched… gorked at. The way to conquer that is to dance as close to the DJ/music area as possible and turn your back on the crowd so you’re facing the music area.
You can do this, by working your way towards it by moving in from the sidelines.
Why do this? Going closer to the music gives your body time to get comfortable with the rhythm and find its moves. Turning your back on the crowd makes you feel less self conscious. When you’re joining the dancefloor, you want to feel relaxed, sink into the mood, build up your confidence.
And don’t think the DJ will judge you either. A DJ will be so preoccupied with playing their music, they might not even notice you (or too spaced out by their tunes to care).
2. Smile!
After a while of being near the DJ/music area, you will feel the dance in your body and you will start to relax. Sooner or later, you will find yourself moving away from the DJ and naturally into the crowd. Smile, as you do this.
Dancing should make you feel happy, and smiling helps spread good vibes amongst other dancing guests.
3. Dance with people
Another way to join the dancefloor is by encouraging a few friends or guests to join it with you. Your initiative might just be what these people need to get dancing, and break out of their nerves. Doing some goofy dancing with friends can help them relax.
4. Dance with space around you
Hopefully, during your home practice, you will have figured out the kind of dancer you are – if you like to move around a lot or stick to one spot. Now you need to adjust how you dance with the dancefloor around you. If you need a lot of room to dance, you might not get the space you need, so you need to adapt.
Always make sure you keep a little distance between you and other people when dancing. You don’t want to bang into people with all your bopping! Similarly, having some consistent space means you can enjoy your dancing without anyone interrupting your grooves.
Learning how to dance at a house party can put you at ease at any social occasion. You won’t feel intimidated by the dancefloor or feel self-conscious dancing among friends and family. You will know how to enjoy yourself, and ultimately that’s how you want to be feeling at every party you go to.

How to Dance at a Club or Party
You probably know people who can dance at a club without a second thought.
They just go out, have a few drinks, get down on the dance floor, and have a great night.
Meanwhile, you're seized by panic and insecurity just thinking about dancing at a club.
And whenever you do drag yourself out, you stay glued to the wall and watch everyone else let loose on the dance floor.
But guess what? Those awkward feels are completely normal. And we PROMISE you can overcome them!
Follow these 5 simple steps and never worry about feeling left out again.
1. Find the beat/rhythm as you make your way towards the dance floor
Don't expect yourself to bust out a Step Up routine out of nowhere as soon as you step foot on the dance floor.
This isn't a movie! Start small – really small – by just bobbing your head to the beat.
Do this before you even get on the dance floor. Think of it this way: Music is the one thing that lubricates the whole experience of being at the club.
It sets the mood as soon as you walk in until the moment you walk out. You have to be comfortable with the music first.
So start interacting with the music right away. You can listen and nod your head a you're holding your drink, hanging with a friend, or even sitting down.
This is an easy way to set yourself up for success on the dance floor before you even start dancing.
Your body will already have a handle on the rhythm, so you're more likely to stay on beat by the time you do get your feet steppin'.
Watch this video to learn how to find and count beats in music:
2. Start with a small bounce / groove
Once you're on, or around, the dance floor, start bouncing with your whole body.
Think of this bounce as a bigger version of your head bob. You're still moving to that same rhythm, but now with your knees, core, and chest.
You know how a baby bounces on his knees when he hears a song he likes? Like that, but not as jolt-y.
Ease into those bounces calmly, then slowly build up your energy. This helps make your dancing look more natural.
Carlo Darang describes what a bounce / groove is in this video:
3. Learn simple steps
Got a handle on the music? Great.
Started bouncing with your body? Check. Now, let's get your feet moving!
But wait – you won't know which foot to step where without any practice.
So learn a few basic dance steps before you go to dance at a club.
This video will teach you how to do 3 basic dance moves that work with any song:

4. Let loose
Now that you've got the basics of dance down, it's time to put on a few finishing touches to make sure you look comfortable and confident with every move.
These quick tips will help you refine your dancing so you look more loose, groovy, and comfortable:
5. Join the party
By this point, you've got a handle on dancing 1. on beat 2. with your whole body 3. using steps.
But you didn't come to dance at a club to do all this alone!
Once you have that base, dance with the people around you.
If you're in a crowd or a group of friends, then you can play off of their movements and energy.
Mimic the moves your friends are doing, lip sync with them, rap Nicki's entire verse in Motor Sport from memory.
And if the DJ or song lyrics tell you to do something (like put your hands up or jump), then do it!
These are little things you can't predict or practice – remember that you're out to have fun, not to play DDR in your head.
Grinding (or whatever you call it) on someone is its own topic – but whether you're dancing with one person or a whole group of people, the most important thing to do is to... Stay in rhythm!
You and your partner or friends could be doing totally different things. They could be jumping while you're pumping your arms.
She could be swaying side to side as you're 2-stepping.
But as long as you're moving to the same beat, it'll still feel like you're dancing together.
(The closer you physically get, though, the more similar you want your movements to be so that you don't end up hitting each other or creating friction between your moves. Dance with them!)

I hope these tips help you kiss those insecurities goodbye!
Follow these 5 steps and you'll realize that it's possible, and actually quite easy, to dance at a club.
You just need the right resources, some practice, and a dash of confidence. ;)
Have fun!
Barefoot dances, embarrassing tracks and other pluses of house parties — Bird In Flight
House parties have always been the most intimate, and in quarantine they have also become the only alternative to nightclubs. Together with Jägermeister, the editors collect a collection of ideal playlists for such meetings, and with the help of experienced party-goers, they are looking for an answer to the question: why is home better?
The best parties happen all of a sudden, so you have to be prepared for anything: police coming, eating dumplings on the floor, and listening to your friends weird music. Our heroes just share such stories, name the main advantages of home parties and advise proven tracks.
The playlists they have collected and other playlists are on our platform, created in collaboration with Jägermeister, without which the ideal home parties are not complete. You can also make your own playlist on it, and then share it on social networks, collect likes and win a prize for the whole company.

1. Don't be ashamed to put on any music
2. Don't have to prepare
— I have a lot of experience with house parties, it used to be the best thing you can imagine: an apartment somewhere in the center, close friends, loudspeakers — rushes. Then we grew up and started doing big parties.
The main thing in house parties is the right people and a sufficient amount of good alcohol, because usually at home the alcohol front is even more active than at raves. Of course, music is also important. It is at home that you can put on a track that you would never play at a regular party, such as a remix of Britney Spears or Cypress Hill, and all your friends will check it out.

At house parties I prefer to listen to ghetto electro or old breaks, always “something with words”. My favorite is DJ Boom's release on New York's Strictly Rhythm. And of course, no house party is complete without time-tested hits like Donna Summer - I Feel Love. The original is already quite danceable, but the producers are not too lazy to write remixes on it again and again, so you can listen to your favorite song in different interpretations, like from DJ Pierre.
During quarantine, we were going to have one big party, but the police came and covered everything up. At the same time, close friends remained at the location, and a house party not at home was organized by itself. True, it was quite stressful because of the police, but definitely unusual.
In general, it seems to me that an important element of a good house party is its suddenness, lack of a plan. In the summer it worked out perfectly: it was not necessary to sit at someone's house, but you could, for example, go to the river with speakers. But now it's colder and you can spend real apartment building. For me, by the way, they are more about an evening with a guitar, although electronic music, of course, can also be played - it all depends on the mood. My friends and I played in a band, and for me such chamber parties often took place with live instruments and singing.
Even if not only acquaintances are present at such an event, the main thing is that everyone is on the same wavelength - then it will turn out sincerely.

3. You can eat dumplings on the floor
4. And dance barefoot
5. Even do yoga in the middle of a party
— At the beginning of quarantine, I didn’t even feel the transition from normal mode to home mode very much, because we at “Culture of Sound” did online streams, in which I also participated. Everything happened according to the scenario of an ordinary party: you play in a familiar space, only instead of one hundred and fifty people on the dance floor, there are a maximum of six in the whole room.
It is home parties that have always existed optionally, but now they have become the main ones. Once I was even invited to such a party as a DJ. That is, it was an ordinary apartment where close friends gathered, but they got confused and rented professional equipment. I ended up having the coziest DJ set of my life because the floor was heated and I played in socks.
I had the coziest DJ set of my life because the floor was heated and I played in my socks.
In general, the buzz of house parties is that you can feel as comfortable as possible: you can dress as you like, even start doing yoga in the middle of the party, and you can definitely go to bed at any moment. That is, all the positive aspects of an ordinary good party are squared here. And you have a sense of security, because at home there is not just strict face control - in general, no stranger will come in.
Chamber house parties usually play slightly different music than big raves, but I don't like hangar music anyway, so I haven't changed much in that regard. Yes, and our club in the “Culture of Sound” itself is quite homely, so I didn’t use the folder with more dance music often, I usually put something calmer.
When you're not at a party, but listening to a stream at home, you interact with a musician in a different way: you see and hear him, but he doesn't. But somehow we watched our friends stream on the projector and sent messages to DJs, so we watched in real time how they pick up the phone, read them and react. It was funny, like in the days of some kind of MTV, where SMS was sent as a running line. And when I played, I gave different signs to my friends, knowing that they were watching the stream at home.

During another such stream, my friends and I made dumplings, cooked them and sat on the floor to eat to the music. But then the guys called and said that they decided to extend the stream until the morning, so I also went to play. It turned out a teleport - from the floor with dumplings I was already on the screen behind the "DJ".
Of course, streams and house parties don't happen all the time, so another new quarantine experience is just sleeping on the night from Saturday to Sunday.

6. It's not scary that a crowd won't gather
7. The distance doesn't matter anymore
8. You can finally put on ambient!
— When the quarantine started, we started doing streams, and we ourselves sat at home and watched them. Each time, my friends and I created a video chat and talked in it, and the DJ who streamed it would put it on his TV to see his audience. In Slavyansk, we didn’t have a place where we would constantly organize parties and gather, so online became such a place for us. Moreover, my friends and I are scattered all over Ukraine, and one friend lives in Germany. And even though everyone is sitting in their kitchen, but at such moments we are together.
In Slavyansk, we didn’t have a place where we would constantly organize parties and gather, so online became such a place for us.
This is what I like about quarantine parties: everything is rushing, it is not clear what to do, but you turn on your favorite music, write to friends, and life goes on.
This is a convenient format, because you don't have to travel far, you don't spend money, because the bar and music are all at your place. But for organizing a house party, you should take care of good sound. Especially if you are going to listen to some experimental music: on a bad audio system, everything will make noise, creak, and nothing will be clear.
At home, I would advise you to pay attention to those styles and genres that you rarely hear offline. You can choose something new for yourself, and if you don’t like it, it’s easy to leave for what you love – it’s fast and free.
By the way, if we organized an offline party with ambient in Slavyansk, almost no one would probably come to it and we would never fight back. And so we could stream both techno and ambient, and in general everything we wanted. I think it's important to include streams or recordings of the musicians or clubs that you like at such house parties, so as not to forget them in these difficult times.

9. You can light a fire in the countryside
10. And rehearse any performance in front of your own
— I've been DJing for about seven years, and in 2013 it just started with house parties. Usually we rented a country house, called friends and put on music. So even now, for the perfect home party, I would advise renting a country house and professional equipment. Firstly, in the house you can isolate yourself from all neighbors; secondly, you can go outside, light a fire - this always adds to the atmosphere. But if this is not possible, you can always hold a house, albeit for five people.
I would advise renting a country house: you can isolate yourself from all your neighbors, go outside, light a fire.
Poltava is generally such a big village where everyone knows each other, so all our parties have always been primarily about communication and atmosphere. But of course, music is also an important part. It is at house parties that we have more musical experiments. Stand-up comedians often check the material before their concerts, performing in small cafes or bars, and then filter the jokes - it worked or it didn't work. So it is with us: we put on tracks that are not suitable for ordinary parties in style, but we like it. After all, at home, as a rule, not some connoisseurs-musicians gather, but friends for whom the vibe itself is important.
By the way, we were supposed to do our next LOCAL party on September 4th, but decided not to risk it and canceled it. The day before the appointed date, friends called us and said that they were really looking forward to this event, so they could not stand it and rented a house. As a result, we had our own mini-LOCAL, very lamp-like.
Parties are a story about unity, and now we are just as united in trying to find a replacement for them. Remember your signature tracks, collect them in playlists, share with friends and win prizes from Jägermeister. Good music, shared memories and small surprises are the joys that you definitely shouldn't refuse.
