'World of Dance,' 'America's Got Talent' Dip in Week 2 But Still Hand NBC Easy Tuesday Win
Declines in key demo and total viewers for both competition series can’t stop the Peacock from ruling mostly rerun-filled primetime
NBC
NBC waltzed its way to a win in Tuesday’s primetime Nielsen numbers last night, thanks to the second week of fresh episodes for “America’s Got Talent” and “World of Dance.”
The Peacock network grabbed first place in ratings among adults ages 18-49 and total viewers for the evening, even though the back-to-back competition series saw dips in both measures from their respective season premieres last week. (And their numbers last season.)
But it should be noted this easy victory was handed to NBC on a night filled with mostly repeat competition on the other Big 4 networks.

Of course ”Brooklyn Nine-Nine“ counts
Fun fact for TV shows on the bubble: You don't have to have stellar ratings to get renewed. Yes, Nielsen numbers are a big part of the decision-making process when the broadcast networks choose which series to ax and which to keep, but they aren't everything. Each year, plenty of shows which fair modestly in the key demo squeak by. Scroll through the TheWrap's gallery to see the lowest-rated TV shows of the 2017-18 season -- so far-- that got renewed. (Of course we counted "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" here, because of that last-minute NBC pickup). All ratings in this story come from Nielsen's "most current" data stream, which includes a week's worth of delayed viewing where available. Least-viewed is first, most-watched last. And, yes, there are ties.

NBC is bringing back two of its hit alternative series for another go-round. The network has renewed Jennifer Lopez-led World of Dance for a fourth season and America’s Got Talent: The Champions for a second season.
A strong ratings performer, World of Dance has averaged a 1.2 rating in adults 18-49 and 4.8 million viewers overall in Live+ seven-day Nielsens season-to-date. The series also delivers a strong upscale audience, with a 115 index among adults 18-49 living in homes with $100K+ incomes and a 118 among adults 18-49 with four or more years of college.
World of Dance is also a top digital performer, generating 22% of its live+ 35 day plus digital 18-49 rating from nonlinear sources, the #1 biggest percentage among NBC alternative series.

Per Deadline, WoD got it’s best ratings since the second episode this past summer. It’s second in the demo behind the voice.
Both shows are on the bubble for next season, and were topped in primetime by the dominant The Voice (2. 0, 10.55M) and the season premiere of World of Dance (1.4, 6.27M) on demo leader NBC as well as CBS’ crime dramas, which took the top viewership spot in each hour as the network won the night overall in that metric.

NBC handily won Tuesday night with the season premieres of “America’s Got Talent” and “World of Dance.” However, both shows–particularly “World of Dance”–were down from last season’s premieres.
“America’s Got Talent,” airing from 8-10 p.m., averaged a 2.4 rating in adults 18-49 and 12.1 million viewers, making it easily the top-rated and most-watched show of the night. It was down approximately 11% in the demo and 2% in total viewers from the Season 12 premiere last May.
In its second season debut, “World of Dance” averaged a 1.8 and 7.2 million viewers. That is down 25% in the demo and approximately the same percentage in total viewers compared to the Season 1 premiere. This season’s premiere was in line with the first season’s ratings average though and topped its timeslot by a wide margin.

Once again, ‘America’s Got Talent’ and ‘World of Dance’ dominated last night’s ratings. According to Hollywood Reporter, no other network could even compete. Also, “World Of Dance” is staying steady with 7+ million viewers again. However, it was down by a tenth of a point in the demo from the previous week.
Though there are usually one or two other original offerings going against the powerful reality duo, that was not the case last night. NBC put out steady episodes of its two big summer series, easily owning the night across the board. America’s Got Talent naturally led, posting a 2.4 rating among adults 18-49 and 12 million viewers.
The strength of America’s Got Talent’s current season really can’t be overstated at this point. The No. 1 summer series across the board, it’s also enjoying its most-watched cycle in its 12-season history.
As for World of Dance, the lead-out continued its own exceptional run with a steady 1.6 rating among adults 18-49 and 7.1 million viewers.

Just a little update on TV Ratings: According to TV By The Numbers for the week of June 26 – July 2, 2017, “World of Dance” came in second again. What’s more, both America’s Got Talent and World of Dance are the #1 and #2 shows for a 5th straight week. Amazing. As Miss Heidi told Courtney and I just yesterday, let’s hope (and could the producer’s be hoping as well?) this garnishes a two-hour time slot for “World Of Dance” next season. That way… the show doesn’t have to edit so much and rush through contestants, performances etc. We want to hear more of their stories and see full dances from each of them. Just think…the judges and host would have time to perform and dance too. I would also love to see them add VIEWER VOTING and for it to be a LIVE show! Are we dreaming and asking too much? What do you think? Let us know in comments!

"I'm interested in finding a passion for dancing"
Nicole Sailer:
"I'm interested in finding a passion for dancing"
This week's Territory Festival featured a promenade performance by Swiss choreographer Nicole Sailer. Spectators walked around the center of Moscow, looking into the windows of buildings in order to see people dancing there.
We met with Nicole and talked about what the concept of "choreographer" means to her, why she likes to work with non-professional dancers, and what struck her in Moscow.
Interviewed by Vita Khlopova
The Home Dancing Promenade was created in 2008 in Lausanne: then Nicole Sayler invited several non-professional performers involved in various types of dance to dance in the windows of ordinary apartments. Spectators, armed with binoculars, a map and a player, looked for the desired apartment according to the plan, stood in front, turned on a given music track and watched the performers. A rare dance performance where you have to do physical activity yourself, winding kilometers around the city.
Since then, the performance has been shown in many countries, and finally reached Moscow. Although site-specific works are already familiar to us, in dance this is one of the first experiences in this format. We talked with Nicole about how the work with Russian dancers went.
- The performance "House Dances" was created 10 years ago, in 2008, in Lausanne. Tell me, how did you come up with this idea to swap performers and spectators, forcing the latter to walk around the city, looking for unfamiliar dances in the windows?
- Then I wanted to work more in the documentary direction, so to speak. I didn’t want to make a performance based on history, but it was more interesting to talk about the dancers themselves. Who are they, what is dance for them, where did their passion for movement come from. This is the first. And then I still wanted to leave the theater, study other forms, and, probably, even leave this circle of modern professional dance. For example, the world of salsa dance is a separate huge dance world, but it does not have any points of contact with the world of modern dance. And I was interested to know about him.
— In 2008, was such a genre of dance, let's call it site-specific, already popular in Europe?
— Yes, even then it was very fashionable, although it seems that everything was just beginning.
Photo — Arya Dil
— You decided not to hire professional performers for this production. Tell me why it was important to you?
- This question is often asked, but how is it, professionals dance better. But to be honest, I'm not sure that they are that much better. In fact, this moment is very interesting to me: the love that I have in my heart for dance, it changes all the time. It's like in a relationship: at first we are in love, and this gives us wings, but then this feeling transforms into something else. It doesn’t get worse, it’s just that passion can leave this love, leaving devotion instead, for example. When I was 16 years old, I went to a nightclub and could dance all night, and it was love, for sure. Look, even now I get goosebumps when I remember this (laughs). And with professionals, everything is different. They dance well, I don’t argue, but it’s more interesting for me to find this passion for dancing among those for whom this is not a profession.
— What requirements did you have at the casting?
- I was looking for people of all dance styles and all ages. By the way, here in Moscow, I received more than 200 applications. I have never had such a large number of applicants.
— How many people usually applied?
- About 20-30, no more.
- We love to dance in Russia, what can I say :) But these applications were all from amateurs, or did professionals also try to get on the project?
- There were a few professionals, but they quickly realized that this was an unpaid project.
— How was the casting in Russia?
- When I saw that the number of applications had exceeded one hundred, I realized that it was necessary to conduct pre-casting, otherwise we simply would not have time to watch everyone physically. As a result, about a hundred people sent their videos, after watching which I invited about 40 people. Of these, I selected half for my project. Of course, watching 200 people live is impossible.
- What was the task for the video: dance whatever you want, as much as you want, be yourself?
- Yes, improvise, do whatever you want. But I still looked for different dance styles to make this work interesting to watch. For example, in Moscow, there is one flamenco dancer, and when she started dancing, it became clear that such a dance would look incredible in the general palette of directions.
- That is, in each city where this performance was held, there was a completely different set of participants in the style of dance? Weren't you looking for the same pattern?
- No, the task was just to find different stories.
— How did the rehearsals go?
- I arrived about two weeks before the premiere. At first there was a casting for three days, it was also necessary to visit the locations for the dance, which took a lot of time. As for rehearsals: I had to follow how the work was going in each window. We have six of them in total, and each shows a completely different style: flamenco, butoh, balboa, zouk, improvisation, hip-hop, and even folk dances. It turns out a very bright palette of dances.
- But you, as a choreographer, helped them with the text of the dance?
- No, I gave them freedom. I didn't put anything. I could, of course, help them in creating situations in which they could hold out for an hour and a half. Because, for example, it is very difficult for a hip-hop dancer to dance for so long without stopping. Or, for example, a couple dancing a balboa dance - this is a very physical dance, very difficult. How to find time for small pauses, how not to get bored during this dance. But, it’s true, most people said: “And I never get tired while dancing.”
— So they dance continuously, not knowing that at that very moment someone is looking at them?
- No, of course they don't know if anyone is looking at them at the moment or not. You have to dance as if you were dancing at home, for your own pleasure.
- When we watch them from the street, we turn on the player with certain music. Do artists also listen to the same track for an hour and a half?
- No, they can dance without music. In fact, they really really do what they want.
- Usually there is a moment in the theater when the viewer is given the opportunity to see the performer, thank him with applause, give flowers, and so on. It turns out that here you are depriving us of such a chance?
- Well, not really: the promenade is only the first part of the performance, after which there are two more parts. When everyone returns back to the exit point, they watch a documentary about the making of this work in 2008. This film is trying to tell just about the passion for dance that we talked about recently. And realizing that in the film and in our project there are still different dancers, I added the third part - a video installation with interviews of Russian participants.
— In your works you often combine dance and new technologies. Tell us why you are interested in working at the junction of these two worlds?
- I am attracted to movement and picture. And that's where they are. When I watch a movie, there is also movement and a picture in it. The dance on the stage is a picture. It is not so much the content or story, but the feeling and image.
“Of course dance can tell stories, but that's secondary. First there must be an image.
- For you, the beauty of movement is more important than a story?
- I think so. I'm more interested in working in a conceptual manner. Of course, I always have content, but I don't tell a story. More precisely, even like this: I am not telling a story, but stories. I don't want to take on plots, I want the dancers to talk about their own.
— What and who inspires you in this world of new technologies and dance? Well, for example, maybe Merce Cunningham or Chunky Move?
- I don't think there is anyone in particular who inspires me. I love going to museums, I love visual arts. I am inspired by the image. My work does not converge only to the use of new technologies. You mentioned Cunningham, well, of course, he had a program with which he created works.
But I have performances where there are no new technologies, but only dance. And what I need is to change the way I work. For example, my latest work, we created a sound promenade with a specially created program on a smartphone. And there was no fixed time, as, for example, here, where the audience still had to appear by a certain hour. And there you could watch the work whenever you wanted. It inspires me to test new features in order to showcase my ideas in a different way.
- Expanding the boundaries of dance in your work, did you not think that the name "choreographer" might no longer be particularly applicable to what you do? After all, this is much more than a dance.
- I think it depends on what we mean by the word "choreographer" and by choreography. In this production, I do not choreograph, but ask them to improvise. It seems to me that everything I do is connected with the body. But the "body" is not only a dancing body, because every ordinary everyday gesture can be staged. For example, I made an installation in the Solyanka Gallery, let's call it a "video dance", but there is no picture. There is only text and sound. Description of the dance. For me, the dance that you imagine in your head is also choreographed. Therefore, everything I do is very "choreographic", even if it is not always "dance". Or even if sometimes there are no performers. In the theatre, for example, the body and gesture are not always at the center of the performance, but for me this is the most important thing.

We will tell you why dancing is sometimes more useful than regular fitness, and what effect dance exercises have on the body and psyche
We are all looking for ways to feel healthier, more energetic and happier. According to research by Japanese scientists, dancing is the most effective exercise that helps maintain not only physical but also psychological health. For eight years, experts have observed 1,000 women who practiced yoga, walking, rhythmic gymnastics and other sports. It turned out that 73% of those who practiced dancing specifically had the highest health scores compared to other participants in the study who chose other sports. [1
The main advantage of dancing is that people of any age and any build can do it. Tap or twerk - you can choose any dance rhythm. “Bonuses” from these classes can be felt already in the first week of classes.
How to choose a dance?

In addition to aesthetic and musical criteria, physical activity should also be taken into account in dancing. On average, a person is able to burn 250-400 kcal per hour of training. But it depends on the intensity of the movements and the style of the dance. Step is one thing, in which the lower body is more actively involved, and acrobatic types, where all muscle groups work, are quite another.
How many calories are spent on dancing:
- pole dance — 800 kcal/hour [2]
- jazz-modern/jazz-funk — up to 600 kcal/hour — [3]
- breakdance — 650 kcal/hour [4]
- twerk — 480 kcal/hour [5]
Such intense exercise is suitable for healthy people who may have already had or have experience in sports.
Beginners who still want to move actively are more suitable:
- classical ballet - 429kcal/hour [6]
- tap dance — 394 kcal/hour [7]
- latin dances — 343 kcal/hour [8]
Do not write off the classics. Waltz and foxtrot on average will help to spend 283 kcal / hour. This is an ideal load for people who have limitations associated with the state of the body.
In any case, both fast and slow movements lower your heart rate, burn calories and help improve your body. [9]

What else is dancing good for?
Increases the overall tone of the body
Dancing, we use a large part of the body, so this hobby can easily replace routine cardio workouts. Since a sedentary lifestyle reduces the health of the cardiovascular system (according to WHO, a person should move at least 150-300 minutes a week, but more is better [10]), dancing helps reduce the risk of getting hypertension, as well as problems with the heart and blood vessels. [11]
More strength appears
Constant fatigue and drowsiness have a negative impact on the quality of life. According to a 2017 study, weekly dance classes make adults more energetic. And if you increase the load to 150 minutes a week, this will reduce the risk of insomnia. Physical fatigue contributes to rapid sleep. [12]
The brain begins to work better
Dancing stimulates several parts of the brain at once, because it makes you focus on the constant movement of the body in space and on memorizing dance patterns. First, this is how we develop coordination. Secondly, long-term memory and cognitive abilities are improved. Studies have confirmed that dancing helps the growth of "white matter", which helps the brain perform these functions smoothly. [13]
Thirdly, it reduces the risk of dementia and Parkinson's disease in old age. Dancing also helps develop new neural connections that are responsible for orientation in space and the executive functions of the brain: concentration, planning, cognitive inhibition, and any other decision-making activities. [14]
Mental and emotional well-being improves
Through dancing, the body produces “happy hormones” – serotonin and oxytocin. The first is formed due to physical activity, and the second is when we begin to feel that we are getting dance moves.
All these chemical processes, as well as music, rhythm, monotonous repetitions of movements, help to get rid of obsessive unpleasant thoughts, which often lead a person into a state of anxiety and increase the risk of depression. University of Hertfordshire psychology professor Peter Lovatt, in his book Dance psychology: the science of dance and dancers, claims that a person receives a charge of good mood while dancing, enough for a week. Increases self-esteem and leaves the feeling of loneliness
Dancing is social entertainment. Starting classes, you get to know a large number of like-minded people. Regular training not only improves the physical and psychological state, but also helps a person to express himself, remove psychological blocks, and liberate himself. Sometimes, some people are the only way to throw out their emotions. Such a hobby, indeed, can strengthen self-esteem and help to believe in yourself. [16]
What is important to consider before starting to dance?
In dancing, as in any other sport, precautions must be taken to minimize the risk of injury.
- Before you start exercising, stretch to warm up your muscles.
