Alvin Ailey's American Dance Theater is a special company, as are its dancers. The company is currently gearing up for its annual season in downtown New York, which runs from November 28 to December 30. The energy you see on stage is reverberating throughout the studios at the company's headquarters in the Hells Kitchen area of New York.

Ailee's original dancers include Hope Boykin. Boykin's personality is saturated in this atmosphere. She stands out among her peers. She is proof that it takes more than just technical talent to become a great performer and pursue a career in a big company. To sustain a career, a dancer like Boykin must use his make-up to the fullest to achieve that star quality.

When Boykin appears on stage, her spiritual qualities immediately attract. Starting in Durham, North Carolina, her boundless energy pointed her to all dance styles: jazz, tap, ballet and her athleticism towards gymnastics. Amidst all this, Boykin's love for contemporary dance classes was in the spotlight, especially in Graham's style.

The American Dance Festival, founded in 1934 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was the organization where Boykin received her early training. She was a three-time winner of the American Dance Festival Young Adult Scholarship. The list of winners reads like 'who's who' in modern dance. The organization places an emphasis on education and provides its students with not only training but also opportunities to improve performance. Over the years, he has accepted a huge number of students and received awards for the quality of teaching and choreography.

Boykin also received early performance opportunities at school concerts, school shows, and competitions before attending Howard University in Washington, D.C. Although there was no dedicated dance department at the time, students could study musical theater but could not complete a graduate degree. in dance. While in Washington, she danced with the New World Dance Company under Lloyd Whitmore.

After graduating from Howard, Boykin attended Ailey's school. It was there that she performed her first solo directed by Matthew Rushing. Boykin was invited by Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson to become a permanent member of their Complexions Contemporary Ballet company, her first paid job. Later, she was a member of the Philadanco Company. Founded in 1970 by Joan Myers Brown, Philadanco provides an opportunity for black dancers.

Boykin joined the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 2000. Here she continued to perform in a huge repertoire, many roles were created by her. Important was the leading role in Odette , inspired by the famous folk singer, choreographed by Rushing.

Developing an interest in choreography, Boykin began to create her own style. Every opportunity given to her was a chance to explore different moves and discover that she had something to say. Her first mentors were the late choreographer Tully Beatty, whom she assisted, and the teacher Madame Gabriela Darvas, who helped her develop her choreographic style. To date, Boykin has delivered three works for Ailey: Surrender acceptance , in collaboration with Ailey company members Abdur-Raheem Jackson and Matthew Rushing Walk in grace for company 50 th anniversary season and revolution, Dream sermons inspired by Dr. (for which she also designed costumes). She says she feels happy working first with Judith Jamison, who hired her, and now with Robert Battle, "who respects tradition but isn't afraid to move forward. " Her advice to young dancers and choreographers: "Don't close the lid of your box, do what you do best." She teaches master classes in New York. (Check her website for upcoming events.)

As a choreographer, Boykin is constantly reworking new pieces. She constantly comes up with new ideas and, in addition to stage work, she is interested in cinema. She is inspired by all genres of music and is interested in friends' original music for collaboration. With the change in dance styles, Boykin says she feels she was "born at the right time" and would like to choreograph for a classical ballet company. Women need a platform to be creative and they should be given the opportunity.” She is the recipient of the New York Dance and Performance Award (Bessie).

Boykin, who lives in Harlem, goes to church every Sunday in the Bronx with her neighbor and co-worker Matthew Rushing. This is the main event of her Sunday. She performed in the dance ministry at the church. There are deep aspects to Boykin's choreography, from a simple piece performed in a church to pieces she wrote for Ailey's troupe. Outreach and mentoring are very important to her. As a student, she was mentored by teachers. The favorite was Fred Benjamin. When she was a dancer, her mentor was Judith Jemison, then director of Ailey. As a choreographer, her early mentor was Joan Myers Brown and then Tally Batty. As a teacher, she enthusiastically passes on Ailee's style and choreography to the company's young dancers. Her participation in audience development is evident in her verbal skills when Ailey puts on special performances for young audiences. She has an easy way to communicate. Using his skills, Boykin, in training attire on a naked stage, addresses a young New York audience in a program specifically designed to increase interest in the company and explains the technical aspects of what it takes to stage a show. She then demonstrates to the audience Horton's choreographed hand movements, which are the main style of Ailey's troupe. Ailey has the largest enthusiastic audience and the company has a great way of marketing to get them involved. There is an Ailey Extension program where anyone can take part in a variety of dance classes.

In addition to two seasons in New York and annual performances at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, the company frequently tours the United States and internationally. Boykin believes travel is important because it broadens one's horizons. In addition to performing and choreography, her interests include writing, film and photography.

Boykin says she enjoys playing in Alvin Ailey's masterpiece. Revelations , Mauro Bigonzetti Deep, and of course Odette. It is spiritual and comes from within. Check out her choreography and performances on YouTube and enjoy her dancing at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, which is 60 years old. th Anniversary of living in downtown New York from November 28 to December 30. It's a great way to end 2018 and welcome New Year 2019.
