ABC's hit reality competition series Dancing With the Stars is amongst the largest productions on television. From the opening numbers and the outrageously gorgeous costumes to the live music and the vibrant stage lights, the series ranks as one of the most entertaining two-hour programs.

From the at-home audience perspective, the broadcast seems cool, calm, and collected; however, we really have no idea how much work goes in behind the scenes.

There are several processes we miss out on, including the scoring system. It looks straightforward, but it's much more stressful and complicated than it appears. So, how does scoring work on Dancing With the Stars? Keep reading to find out!

How does scoring work on 'Dancing With the Stars'?

Let's start with the basics. After a couple performs their dance, each judge provides feedback and holds up a numeric score paddle from one to 10, for a total of four to 40 points.

It sounds simple enough, right? Well, it's much more time-limited and pressuring than it seems. Per Business Insider, after the dancers finish their performance, the judges only have three minutes to determine their scores and communicate them with production staff members.

"The judges have a piece of paper on their desk. After each dance, they'll write down their score. The piece of paper is then run frantically to the control room," executive producer Joe Sungkur told the publication.

He added, "Standards and practices from ABC then verifies that everything is fair and checks those scores, and we then go to the judges to reveal their scoring, and we double-check that the score they hold up reflects the score they wrote down."

Most of this race against the clock occurs when the celebrity and professional dancer team get interviewed about their performance by host Tyra Banks. Thus, viewers at home have no idea about the intense situation going on inside the studio.

Well, we might have an idea about the time crunch since Tyra always lets us know that the producers are screaming in her ear to keep the show on track and avoid going over the specific limit for each segment.

How does scoring work on 'DWTS' if there's more than one dance?

Sometimes, the reality competition series has the couples dance two different routines in one night. It's tough enough already to learn one set of choreography, but adding in another one? That must be brutal.

So, when the time comes for a star and their dance partner to dance twice, their scores combine to create one total score. For example, let's say a couple receives 32 out of 40 for their first dance, and after their second dance, they earn 36 out of 40. Their total for the night would be 68 out of 80 points.

There's also a dance-off that comes about once we enter mid-season. Couples compete against each other in a dance and song of one of the judge's choices. The judge then decides which pair they think performed the style of dance best. The winning team gains bonus points, which get added to their total score for the night.

Dancing With the Stars airs on Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.

"Dancing With the Stars" has become a huge production. The lights, music, sets, and more have made the reality TV dance competition one of the most entertaining series on television. However, a lot of work goes into the production of the show, and fans have no idea what really goes on behind the scenes. According to Us Weekly, there are many inside secrets that viewers don't get to see when it comes to "DWTS." One of those aspects is pairing the celebrities with their professional dance partners.

Casting producer Deena Katz previously told Glamour that producers have the final say about which stars dance with a specific pro. "There are some celebs that have wishes, and we always say we can't guarantee it. We always want the best pairing because we know them so well," she stated, adding that compatibility is key when partnering up the pros with the stars.

"On live TV, there's no second chances," producer Joe Sungkur told Business Insider. "Of course, the live aspect of the show makes each episode all the more crucial. There's a total state of excitement, adrenaline is always running throughout veins throughout the show," he continued. "Some of the most exciting things that happen are the ones you can't predict and so we're always looking to those special moments that people will be talking about the next day."

Another part of the show that fans never get any insight into is the scoring process.

"Dancing With the Stars" viewers watch the judges hold up their score paddles for each dance, week in and week out. However, the scoring process may surprise many fans. While it might seem that the judges have some time after the dance is over to score the performance, that's not true, per Us Weekly. The judges actually turn in their scores well before they officially hold up their paddle for the camera. This makes the scoring process much more difficult than many viewers may have originally believed.

During an interview with Business Insider, producer Joe Sungkur revealed exactly what is expected of the judges to score an individual dance. "The judges have a piece of paper on their desk. After each dance they'll write down their score. The piece of paper is then run frantically to the control room," Sungkur confessed. "Standards and practices from ABC then verifies that everything is fair and checks those scores, and we then go to the judges to reveal their scoring and we double-check that the score they hold up reflects the score they wrote down."

It seems there is so much more to "Dancing With the Stars" than meets the eye. It's no wonder that the series has earned 113 Emmy nominations and 18 wins.

How points are calculated on the project

According to the rules of the project, the fate of the participants is decided by the judges and spectators (50% to 50%).

The first stage of evaluation is through judges.

Each judge can give a pair from 1 to 10 points. The total number of their ratings forms the standings, which we see on the screens. The results of the standings are translated into total scores from 1 to 14 (if 14 couples participate in the project). So, 1 point will be given to the pair with the least number of marks from the judges, and the maximum point, which depends on the number of pairs of participants, will be given to the pair - the leader according to the judges' marks.

The second stage depends on the viewers, who can influence the fate of their favorites by voting via SMS and calls.

Voting for all couples takes place throughout the broadcast until the moment of official termination. When the presenter announces the closing of the voting lines, the votes of the viewers are counted, and the standings of the viewers' voting, which the viewers do not see on the air, are converted into points from 1 to 14, depending on the number of pairs of participants. The couple with the most audience votes will receive the highest score. The points from the judges are summed up with the points from the audience. The number of audience votes each couple received is not disclosed due to the format rules that are common in all countries that adapt the project.

The third stage is the show of results.

The moment when the presenter randomly announces the participants who continue their participation in the project, and also names 2 couples that are at risk through the smallest number of votes from the audience and judges' ratings. The pair, which in total from the judges and the audience received the least number of points according to the rules, leaves the project. But if two couples have the same total score from the judges and the audience, then the judges decide their fate.

Preparation in the program begins long before the first graduation. First of all, the producers select couples, and then they begin to train, Vasily Kozar, the main choreographer and director of the show, told RIA Novosti.

"We started about three weeks before the project. This is the average time for all couples, although someone started later. Non-professionals began to learn the steps and in a week and a half the couples began to prepare the first dance. Even if a trained person comes to the show , who used to dance, they start all over again, because you need to feel the partner and work out the basic steps with him.

When it comes to "prepared participants", the organizers of the show have in mind the minimum skills.

"Most of the participants in the show are artists, and there are two whole semesters of dancing in theater universities. Perhaps someone passed this subject with a C (laughs). But many start from the very beginning," Cordo said.

"Dancing is a sport, and it takes a lot of energy and is also traumatic. Both the body and the brain need to be prepared. There are people who quickly master the elements, but the next day something in the body starts to hurt. But courage heals from the stage, and everyone is ready to move on," Kozar stressed.

At the same time, non-professional partners face the moral component of preparing numbers. For example, the main problem for Olga Medynich was to find a balance between her own perception of the dance and the real state of affairs.

"It takes a lot of emotions that you can't come to an agreement with your body. At some point during a rehearsal it seems to you that you are dancing brilliantly, but then you watch the recording and you realize that this is not so. You need to find harmony in order to internally the feeling of the dance coincided with the real one," Medynich said.

For some non-professionals, it becomes difficult to become part of a dance composition, where music plays an important role . Among them is Maria Mironova, but the artist noted that just acting skills allow you to cope with this.

"The theater school helps you feel the music. That's the most important thing when you feel the composition. I'm presented as an actress with classical images, but with the waltz, it was just that I had problems, because I like fiery melodies more. I suffered a little because I understood that if I don’t feel the music, then the dance will look like just staged movements, without emotions,” Mironova noted.
