Using magician's thread to make a dancing cane
I wanted to make my own dancing cane. All you need is a drill, some magicians thread, and a far lighter cane than mine.
Making a dancing cane is pretty simple. As the video above says, just drill a tiny hole about 1/2" above the balance point of your cane and tie on a piece of high strength, nearly invisible magician's thread. Make a loop on the other end of the thread for your thumb, and let the fun begin.
I tried this on a regular walking cane. It is far too heavy to manipulate without lots of practice, and will bruise or break things when mistakes are made.
I suggest making your own from doweling, as suggested in the video.
Making the loop slightly over-sized makes changing hands easier.

how to do the magic trick at home
Levitation cane trick has been captivating audiences for generations. At first glance, it is impossible to do this trick without magic. In fact, he also has his own secrets, knowing which, you can not only make the cane fly, but also use it as a magic wand for other unusual tricks.
This video shows one example of a flying cane show:
Focus Secret
The secret of the trick lies in a thin invisible thread tied in the center of the cane. With proper training, a magician can make such a cane not only move easily, allegedly without the help of hands, but also describe complex figures in the air.
The flying cane is quite simple and can be made at home. For this you will need:
- Highly flexible cardboard or thick paper;
- several meters of invisible thread;
- metal ball with hole, nut or small weight;
- colored paper;
- foil or confetti.
Roll a cardboard or paper tube 1 to 3 cm thick. Glue it carefully along the entire length so that the edges of the tube do not diverge even from a blow. You should not use adhesive tape: it is not as durable as glue, and over time the cane can deform.
The material can also be used as an old exposed film, tightly folded into a roll and stretched into a thin tube.
In this case, you will have to additionally tinker, securing the ends so that the “cane” does not develop from a sharp movement.
In order for the tube you have glued to “fly” easily and obey the magician well, its length should not exceed 60 - 80 cm.
Not far from the center of the cane, you need to make a hole with a needle in advance and pass a thread through it, the end of which should be left longer: after the first “tests”, most likely, a small weight will have to be attached to this thread to make it easier to control the cane.
It is worth remembering that the nature of the movement of the cane will depend on the location of the thread. It is best to fix it slightly away from the center so that one edge slightly outweighs: in this case, your manipulations will look more natural and at ease.
This is important! The reed can be any thickness, however, the thicker it is, the more difficult it will be to make it fly beautifully and naturally.
Pay special attention to the color of the thread. It is best to choose transparent threads, they are the hardest to notice. If they could not be found, then you can use a black thread, however, in this case, your suit should also be black to mask your "secret".
Tape the outside of the finished straw with colored paper, confetti or cut out stars. The magic cane is ready! However, if it is not possible to make a flying cane on your own, you can freely buy it in stores specializing in magic items.
Cane control
Flying cane is a familiar prop for many professional magicians. The advantage of this trick is that, despite being spectacular, it is quite simple to perform, and requires not so much complex preparations as artistry and sleight of hand.
Handling a cane is in many ways similar to the actions by which a puppeteer makes puppets suspended by strings dance. The simplest tricks involve attaching a thread to the index or middle finger.
With a little practice, you can make your cane move through the air, make circles and figure eights, and even spin in the air.

However, if you want to learn how to perform more complex and beautiful "figures", you can think of a system of blocks through which an invisible thread will be pulled. The easiest option is to fasten it on the back of the collar, passing it through the head and fingers. In this case, you will be able to control the cane without holding your hand directly over it, and accordingly, its movements will seem more independent.
To make it harder for the audience to relate your hand movements to the flight of your "magic" wand, you can fasten the thread on the fingers of your right hand, passing it through the neck and the second hand. In this case, the left hand, under which the cane will “hang in the air”, will remain practically motionless, and all control will be carried out by the second hand, on which, naturally, the public will pay much less attention.
The main thing to remember when showing this trick is that in no case should you keep your hands motionless. The faster you move, the harder it will be for the audience to notice the thread holding the reed.
Of course, this trick requires a lot of practice before you can impress your guests with a truly unusual spectacle. It is very easy for an inexperienced illusionist to get entangled in the thread and thereby give out his secret.
The flying cane can be used in many different ways. The number of tricks you can do with it depends not only on your level of skill, but also on the design of the cane itself. So, inside a hollow tube, you can put a home-made device like a New Year's cracker. In this case, a small clap or movement of a thread attached to the “clapperboard” will be enough for confetti to fall from a cane rotating in the air.
