The world has changed
Oh, how beautiful and well designed the world seemed at the end of 19th and early 20th century, when the glorious Victorian era ended! Like a mighty steam locomotive, rushing at full speed into the future. Even in the class, sexual, national and racial inequality of the then society, many politicians and philosophers saw some lofty idea. Social inequality ensured the proper functioning of society and seemed as natural as the structure of a living organism, in which not all organs are equal, but all are necessary. Arts and literature contributed in every possible way to the improvement of morals. Technology and science have made humanity powerful and able to withstand the challenges of nature.
In this sweet ecstasy, humanity fell into the First World War, hoping to end this little misunderstanding by Christmas. But it turned out that the war was destined to last four terrible years.
Dance the Charleston
During this war, it turned out that science and technology gave rise to the most productive weapons of murder: machine guns, aircraft, zeppelins and poison gases. All those who survived in the midst of this lethal frenzy, with good reason, considered their survival a miracle. And they doubted very much that this miracle was sent by God, as they had been taught once in childhood. Already they, the survivors, knew for sure that prayers did not save in battles. Death did not make out ranks, races and religions. On the battlefield, soldiers, semi-literate hard workers and peasants, and officers, the educated class were equally vulnerable. Bullets and shrapnel turned out to be infernal internationalists and equally struck white Europeans, blue-black Senegalese, and dark-skinned Indians.
Unexpectedly, feminism won. The weaker sex showed its strength and vitality, successfully replacing men at the machines, and at hard work, where, it seemed, nature itself set strict limits for women.
In general, the survivors seriously thought about whether they lived correctly before the war. And they understood: no, it's not. You can not hope for the future, it may simply not be! You can not build abstract plans! You have to live in the moment! If you really want to, hope in God, but don’t make a mistake yourself!
The Roaring Twenties
The ten years after the Great War are often referred to as the "Roaring Twenties". The title is well deserved. They were indeed loud in the truest sense of the word. cars voted , which were produced in such quantities that, unlike horses, they became available to everyone. Radio became a mass medium, a small miracle that delivered news and music to people's homes. The music came from everywhere, from every entertainment establishment that visibly spread around: cafes, dance halls, theaters and cinemas.
Ksenia Parhatskaya performs the Charleston
And yes, the music has also changed. Before the war, this music, all this jazz, seemed like a cacophony. But now the hearing of mankind was corrupted by the thunder of guns and the explosions of shells. And jazz came just right.
For new music, terribly democratic, it was not necessary to go to concert halls dressed up as if for a diplomatic reception. In a cabaret, that is, in a tavern where wine was served, it was permissible to dance from the heart in front of everyone, to give out some kind of bullshit on the dance floor to dashing Negro music. Emboldened women no longer waited for the invitation of gentlemen. Under this rhythmic and crazy music, one could go on a crazy act in the old days and dance alone or in pairs with a girlfriend, raising their beautiful legs high and waving their arms cheerfully. Fortunately, dresses shortened to the knees of a new fashionable style made it possible to dance deftly and beautifully. It was not imperialism or socialism that captured the world, it was captured charleston .
Charleston from Charleston
The name of the dance comes from the city of Charleston (Charleston) in the US state of South Carolina. The city was founded in 1670 by settlers from England, naming it in honor of the then reigning king Charles II (1630 - 1685). But a piece of land on the American continent, where this city is located, was called a colony Carolina in honor of the father of this Charles, king, Charles I (1600 - 1649) , who was beheaded during previous revolutionary riots. Later, in 1729, the Carolinas split into North and South. So, the British monarchy and a frivolous dance turned out to be connected by a long thread of historical events!
The end of the film "Chicago". Charleston
The Jenkins Orphanage is traditionally considered the birthplace of the Charleston dance. A brass band made up of black orphans played at city charity events. Young musicians merrily danced to the beat of the music. But the local dance would have remained a landmark of the provincial Charleston, if it did not get on Broadway. At 191920s black composer
James P. Johnson (1894-1955) wrote the song "Charleston" for the musical show "Runnin' Wild", which became an instant hit. The dance, which the artists danced wildly to this melody, quickly gained popularity. The American and world public has only just begun to get used to the idea of women's equality. And there was a Charleston - this has never happened before! - women's dance, and it excited the audience. Girls who danced the Charleston alone or as a couple were called "flappers". It was an ambiguous word. In English, it means "crackers". Judging by the old way, the name seemed to be contemptuous. After all, it is not fitting for a woman to dance without a gentleman! And if she dances alone, then she is looking for a man, a sponsor, which means she is a prostitute. The word "flapper" had another meaning, "whore". Charleston - the dance of accessible girls? O!
Josephine Baker on the cover of her record
But, as already mentioned, during the war there were serious changes in society, and emancipated flapper girls usually worked. Because they had the means of subsistence. And they dreamed of a friend of the heart more than of a breadwinner spouse. And since, as a rule, the “crackers” were simple girls, their response to disrespectful harassment could also be simple, but sensitive. By the way, once again about the ambiguity of the word "flapper". Another meaning is "mallet". Therefore, down with tradition and glory to Charleston!
Charleston conquered America. Learning to dance was not difficult. His movements were simple and unsophisticated. The main skill was to move energetically to fast, rhythmic music and, smiling, raise legs rather high and swing arms energetically. In 1925, all of America danced the Charleston.
When the time came to export the Charleston to Europe, the famous mulatto dancer Josephine Baker (1906–1975) came to Paris on tour from America. She fascinated Paris, but she herself was so fascinated by this city that, in the end, she took French citizenship. She proved her loyalty to her new homeland during World War II, fighting in de Gaulle's army against the Nazis. However, this is a different story. And at 19In 27, she danced the Charleston almost naked in a banana skirt, which outraged the usual French much less than the Americans. In general, thanks to Josephine Baker, the French public took the American dance with enthusiasm. And from Paris, he conquered all of Europe like Napoleon, and became as popular here as in America. So the Charleston became the king of dance in the 1920s.
Well, speaking of kings, let's talk about how American dance captivated British kings. The Charleston crossed the English Channel and became so popular in Great Britain that even the heir to the crown, Edward, Prince of York, danced it. Probably, the spirit of King Charles II, after all, but involved in the name of this dance, was confused. He would never have thought that a candidate for his crown would be jumping around imitating the wild dances of black slaves from American plantations! This will not lead to good! Just look, a great-great-grandson will get along with some unbecoming American!
The old man looked into the water! Edward VIII married an American divorcee in 1936, for which he renounced the crown. And the history of the British Empire in the twentieth century, far from Charles II, went in a completely different way.
Red Charleston?
The Charleston was noticed even in the country of the victorious proletariat, in the USSR. People liked this dance, which came from the decaying West, but the Soviet ideological authorities did not. People's Commissar Anatoly Vasilyevich Lunacharsky, for example, wrote that he considered this dance extremely disgusting and harmful. The People's Commissar said - the People's Commissar did. Or rather, not the people's commissar himself, but the Main Repertory Committee subordinate to him. The performance of American dances on the stage and in Soviet institutions was banned at 1924 year. At the same time, the decree on the ban noted that these dances “... are undoubtedly aimed at the basest instincts. ... they are essentially a parlor imitation of sexual intercourse and all sorts of physiological perversions” . As always, the managing grandfathers took care of the growing youth: they wouldn’t corrupt! Simultaneously with the Charleston, the foxtrot, shimmy and two-step were banned. All at once, what to deal with these bourgeois dances?
However, as an illustration of bourgeois decay, the Charleston was included in the first Soviet ballet The Red Poppy by R. Gliere, and also in D. Shostakovich's ballet The Golden Age.
But, as sometimes happened with people's commissars, Lunacharsky died. But the Charleston survived, as sometimes happened with dances. Having emerged from the underground, the twist and the Charleston were once again on everyone's lips in the Soviet Union.
In the 1960s, they even translated into Russian and widely sang on the radio the Czech song "Grandma, teach me to dance the Charleston." Czech authors, on the other hand, reacted to the “second youth” that the Charleston experienced in those years. It was the nostalgia of those who were then 60+, memories of the glorious roaring twenties when they were young ... Old dances about the main thing ...
"Second youth" - a guarantee of a long life. Charleston is not heard from every radio tube now, but it is still on everyone's lips. It sounds in the cinema if they want to remind you of America in the 1920s, of the old, pre-crisis times. And, importantly, the Charleston multiplied and turned into more modern dances, Lindy Hop and Swing. Children, of course, do not want to be like a parent, but you cannot hide kinship. And he who has ears, let him hear, and he who has feet, let him dance.
Cheerful dance, depraved dance. What do we know about Charleston?

After the end of the First World War, "civilized humanity" broke loose. Collapsed all the fences and fences, which before the war were built within society, and which were considered the main basis of order.
Survivors of the Great War, amid machine guns, planes, zeppelins and gas attacks, rightfully considered their survival a miracle. And they doubted very much that this miracle was of a divine nature. After all, prayers did not save in battles. Death did not make out ranks, races and religions. Soldiers, semi-literate hard workers and peasants, and officers, the educated class were equally vulnerable at the front. The white Europeans, the black-to-blue Senegalese, and the dark-skinned Indians died equally from bullets and shrapnel. And the feminists unexpectedly won. Women, who before the war were treated with a slight grin or poorly explained malice - the weaker sex, after all - successfully replaced men where, it seemed, they had no place due to their nature: at the machines, and at hard work.
In general, one should have wondered if this was how people lived before the war. And most often people understood: no, it’s not like that. Do not hope for the future, it may not be! Don't make abstract plans! Live the moment! In God, of course, hope, but do not make a mistake yourself!
The ten years after the war are often referred to as the "roaring twenties". And they, indeed, roared in full. Cars gave their voice, which became available to all segments of society, radio became a mass means of communication. And, of course, from everywhere, from every entertainment establishment, which was apparently divorced, music thundered.
Before the war, this music, all this jazz, would have seemed like a cacophony. But now it was just right. New music did not have to be listened to in concert halls, dressed up as if for a reception to a royal person. You could go to a tavern, that is, a cabaret where they served wine, and where it was permissible, after a glass of wine, to give out a chucha heartily on the dance floor to dashing Negro music. The women already had the courage not to wait for the invitation of gentlemen. To such music, one could dance alone or in a pair with a girlfriend, waving their arms merrily and raising their legs high. Fortunately, the style of the new dresses, shortened almost to the knee, made it possible to do this deftly and beautifully. The world was captured not by imperialism, and not by socialism. The Charleston took over the world.
This fun dance takes its name from the city of Charleston in the US state of South Carolina. By the standards of US history, Charleston is an old city. It was founded in 1670 by settlers from England and named after King Charles II (1630 - 1685) who ruled at that time. Charles Town was the first city on a large piece of land, which the king granted in 1663 to eight lords who supported his return to the throne after the revolution in which his father was killed, Karl I (1600 - 1649) . In honor of Charles I, the donated lands were called the colony of Carolina. Later, in 1729, the Carolinas split into North and South. This is how distant, after 300 years, the connection between the British monarchy and the frivolous dance is revealed!
Traditionally, the birthplace of the Charleston is the Jenkins Orphanage. Black orphans played at charity events in a brass band. And they danced as best they could. They were children!
But local music would have remained a local attraction in the city of Charleston if it hadn't made it to Broadway. Based on a simple melody, black composer James P. Johnson (1894-1955) wrote the song "Charleston", which, having sounded on the show "Runnin' Wild", instantly turned into a hit. And the dance of the same name to the same melody and in the same rhythm began to rapidly gain popularity.
What electrified the public the most was that the Charleston was supposedly a female dance. This has never happened before! It could be danced alone or by a couple of girls, who in society began to be called "flappers" (which means "flappers" in English). The name seems derogatory. Judging in the old way, a woman cannot dance without a gentleman. And if she dances alone, then she is looking for a sponsor, which means she is a prostitute. One of the meanings of the word "flapper" was "whore". It was exciting!
Meanwhile, the old argument about the morality of a girl dancing alone turned out to be wrong. Emancipated flapper girls, as a rule, worked, and therefore they had a livelihood. And they dreamed not so much of a breadwinning wife as of a friend of the heart. And since the “crackers” were simple girls, they could answer disrespectful harassment simply, but sensitively. By the way, another meaning of the word “flapper” is “mallet”. So, down with tradition and glory to Charleston!
Charleston conquered America. Learning to dance was not difficult. His movements were simple and unsophisticated. The main skill was to move energetically to fast, rhythmic music and, smiling, raise legs rather high and swing arms energetically. In 1925, all of America danced the Charleston.
It's time to infect Europe with the Charleston. The Parisian public recognized this dance when Josephine Baker (1906–1975) arrived there on tour from America . This mulatto fascinated Paris, and in turn was so fascinated by it herself that, in the end, she became a French citizen. And during the Second World War, she proved her loyalty to her new homeland by deed. However, this is a different story.
But in 1927 she demonstrated unusual and incendiary dances in Paris, accustoming the French public to jazz rhythms. In addition, dancing almost naked in a banana skirt frapped the French much less than the Americans. In general, the French public enthusiastically accepted the Charleston in her performance.
Thanks to Josephine Baker this dance has become as popular in Europe as in America. Charleston was recognized as the king of dancing.
By the way, again about the kings, and again about the kings of England. Charleston crossed the English Channel and became popular in the UK. So popular that even the heir to the crown, Prince Edward of York, danced it. Probably, the spirit of King Charles II, indirectly involved in the name of this dance, was confused. He did not think that the candidate for the heir to his crown would like the wild dances of black slaves from the American colonies! So not for long and before an inappropriate marriage with some American. How the old man looked into the water! There was a marriage with an American divorcee, because of which Edward VIII at 1936 renounced the crown. As a result, the history of the British Empire in the twentieth century, far from Charles II, went completely differently.
This dance was noticed even in the USSR. Like everything that came from the decaying West, people liked this dance, but not the Soviet ideological authorities. People's Commissar Lunacharsky, for example, wrote: "I saw the Charleston dance and I consider it extremely disgusting and harmful." Said by the people's commissar - done by the Glavrepertkom subordinate to him. In 1924, the performance of American dances was prohibited on the stage and in Soviet institutions, which, as stated in Decree “… are undoubtedly aimed at the basest instincts. ... they are essentially a parlor imitation of sexual intercourse and all kinds of physiological perversions” . As always, concern for the growing change: not to corrupt! The same ruling as the Charleston banned the foxtrot, shimmy and two-step. What is to be done with them, bourgeois dances?
However, willy-nilly, at least as an illustration of the decay of the bourgeoisie, the Charleston was demonstrated in the first Soviet ballet The Red Poppy by R. Gliere, as well as in D. Shostakovich's ballet The Golden Age.
But Lunacharsky died. This has happened to drug addicts. But the Charleston survived. This happens with dancing. Having emerged from the relative underground, the Charleston, along with the twist, once again found itself on everyone's lips in the Soviet Union. Even the Czech song "Grandma, teach me to dance the Charleston" was translated into Russian and sung quite widely. By the way, Czech authors reacted to the "second youth" of the Charleston, which the dance experienced abroad in the 1960s. This was due to the nostalgia of those who were 60+ in those years for the glorious roaring twenties, for their youth ... Old dances about the main thing ...
"Second youth" - a guarantee of a long life. Although the Charleston is now not heard from every radio tube, it is still on everyone's lips.
